Hi everyone! This is my first post over here at dreamwidth. And it looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!
First off, thanks to roguegambit for the invite! I'm going to actually use this, I promise. I never really got into LJ, but I see that I already have several friends here and I'm sure they'll help me along when I can't figure things out. : )
Anyway, going to surf the site and figure out all the fun things I can do over here. This is going to be a blast!

Date: 2009-05-03 12:23 am (UTC)If I can get that quiz done I think I'll be all right, because I can go in early Monday and ask one of my friends to let me see their code so I can see where I went wrong. *crosses fingers* Hehe.
Wow, okay, going to stop that rant now... LOL. Sorry didn't mean to go crazy on you. Anyway. What're you up to right now? You just finished a class, yes? (I had to do a mass delete on my inbox at one point, sorry!). So when do you have to go back?
There should be an interesting topic on group soon... Jalana had a good idea for discussion and to do research for a fic she's going to write, and so I told her to post it. Haven't heard back from her, though, so we'll see!

Date: 2009-05-03 12:36 am (UTC)I'm sure you'll do fine. If it's anything like doing HTML, if you have 1 <> or / in the wrong place, the whole thing goes to hell in a handbasket.
Feel free to rant. I'm on a week's break from school. Start back on the 11th and it's children's literature this time around. It's only for 6 weeks, thank god. Finished MY class from hell with a B. I'm stoked.
Good idea for discussion? Details woman! DETAILS! :) Good luck with the quiz. You know where to find me if you need to rant or chat :)

Date: 2009-05-03 12:49 am (UTC)And yeah, it is going to be a good class. I mean, this is what I want to do with my life. I am going to learn things, which is good. I'm just stressing over this program a bit. xD About half done reading the second chapter for this week though, and I think I might understand a little more of it now. *hopes the quiz isn't too impossible*
And ha, yes, having anything in the wrong place completely demolishes everything. The computer can't read our minds yet, unfortunately... Or, actually, I'm going to call that fortunately. *has read way too much sci-fi*
Yay for a break! And ooh, Children's Literature sounds like fun! I love literature, and childrens' books are fun to write! Sounds like you'll enjoy that class. And yay, I'm glad you got a B! That's awesome. *huggles Krishna* Congrats!
Hahaha. Well, let Jalana start it. It's her baby. But she's trying to come up with a fic that's almost a parody of all girl!Harry stories, but at the same time not quite. It's kind of hard to explain. So she wants everyone to come up with girl!Harry cliches- all the ones they hate, the ones they think could have worked if they'd been done better, things that completely turn them off from a fic altogether. Now personally I don't like girl!Harry at all. Mainly because I've never read a good one. So I couldn't give her much advice, and so told her to start a discussion on group. I think it'll be interesting, and I'm sure I'll like hers, so that'll be a girl!Harry fic I actually like. xD
Ha, oh, actually I just thought of one cliche- even when Harry has to be disguised as a girl for something in a fic, and he's not actually a girl, they ALWAYS call him "Harri" or "Harriet". Grrrr. That drives me insane, and I immediately stop reading (even if it's just a disguising thing). I can't do it. x.x

Date: 2009-05-03 01:50 am (UTC)I just think it's so cool that you're doing this. Remember: you can NEVER EVER read too much sci-fi. Who's your fav? I love Issac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.
The literature class will be good. I'm just pissed that we're having to read "The Giver". I loathe, hate, detest, abhor that book. It was great when I read it the first time when I read "Brave New World".
Hopefully Jalana will post something soon. Sounds like a promising fiction. Girl!Harry is odd. Um, I think it's Little Miss Mary (?) where Harry is taken in by Snape and pretends to be his niece. It was odd at best. I can read most stuff but I've got to be in a mood to read girl!Harry. I did read one where Harry was a man but dressed like a girl because his aunt wanted a girl. I'll have to find the name of that one. Harri or Harriet? Oh please. Give me a break. I'm tired of the cliched stuff like that.
I need something new to read y'know? I think I've read all the good ones out there and can't find anything new. Right now I'm reading Shattered by Nym. Any good?

Date: 2009-05-03 02:24 am (UTC)Haha. Very true!! Sci-fi is amazing. The thing I love about it, that's so hard to explain to people who aren't into it, is that the really captivating thing about sci-fi is that it's about people. Giant robots, cities of the future, computers that read your mind, interplanetary exploration- that's fun, really it is. But the lure of sci-fi is seeing how people react when thrust into new situations. It shows us that, at the heart of things, no matter how strange and different the circumstances, we are human. Sci-fic is a glimpse into the human experience, and looking at who we are as a whole. Which is why I love it so much, and why it lures people in. Of course then you have the people that go see I, Robot (which I never saw but could tell was NOTHING like the book) and think they don't like sci-fi, or totally misinterpret the genre. Which drives me insane. But, ha! Gotten way off topic here. *grin*
Asimov is my guy. Seriously, I love that man. If there was one person, living or dead (discounting relatives) that I could spend a day with, it would be him. That man was an absolute genius. I collect the older editions of his books. The ones that came out in paperback for like 75 cents at the time, and are now like three dollars at half priced books. *grin* Mad love for the man, I tell you. Pure genius.
Bradbury, I've only read Farenheit 451. What else do you recommend?
Oh, when Jalana says girl!Harry, she means Harry born as a girl. I'm not quite sure on what her plot is but I'm sure she'll do it well. And, I thought Little Miss Mary was transgender? I've never read it, but snow brought it up a while back and I thought that's what she had said. I don't consider that girl!Harry. If someone's going to tackle transgender in fanfiction, kudos to them. It'll likely be well-written. No, I'm talking about Harry being BORN as a girl, and called Harri or Harriet (I mean, really??) and living his life as a stereotypical whiny preteen girl. Ugh. Link to this Harry dressing as a girl one?
Yeah, The Giver was incredibly depressing. Didn't like it at all. At least it's only 6 weeks, yes? : (
Yeah, I don't have anything to read right now either. So busy it doesn't reaaly matter though, xD. Never heard of that fic, but if it's good let me know and I'll check it out at some point. Have you read all of the snarry-a-thon fics? The Shadow of the Other and Seven Steps to Heaven were really good, I thought. : )

Date: 2009-05-03 12:12 pm (UTC)Sci-fi is the best. Cliff keeps telling me that I've crossed over into pure geekdom by reading Sci-Fi. Bradbury: Illustrated Man ALL the way. The, Martian Chronicles, Something Wicked This Way Comes and everything else. Read Illustrated Man before you read any of the others.
Asimov is fantastic. I think my day would be with Douglas Adams. Have you tried half.com for Asimov's books? That's where I get a lot of my books. I got Cliff an out-of-print 3 book series by Piers Anthony for like $8.
I haven't been been keeping up with the group :( Bad Rogue. I'll have to go back and see if anything has been posted. Little Miss Mary was transgender but Harry ended up Pregnant. I honestly don't think I've read a book where he was BORN as a girl. That's a little far-fetched even for me.
I had to read The Giver in my undergrad classes and my entire class LOVED it. I was the oddball out. I'm used to it :) I'll check out The Shadow of the Other and Seven Steps to Heaven. I haven't even had time to check out the Snarry-a-thon fics. The Plant is pretty good too? Thanks for the recs.

Date: 2009-05-03 11:00 pm (UTC)Okay, will keep that in mind. *marks down book title* And I don't think I've heard you mention Cliff before. *interested look* ^^
*nods* Yes, Asimov is epic. And, no, never heard of this site- *clickies link and bookmarks it* Okay just saw a book on there for 75 cents... I think this will become my new best friend. xD!!! Thanks so much for the link!!
Hahaha. See if anything's been posted? A TON of stuff has been posted, the challenges are blowing up like crazy. We've calmed down in the last day or so but now Lucie has a cute series running. It's been fun- come back to us! xD
Never read ones where Harry starts out as a girl? Well I don't think I've ever FINSISHED one, but I've seen lots. xD They're rarely good, so you're not missing much.
Yeah, those three are the only ones I've read but they were great, truly. Very emotional and well done. I was cracking up ALL THE WAY THROUGH "The Plant". It was pretty funny. xD I also know who wrote all three of them. xD And I assure you they'd appreciate comments!!

Date: 2009-05-03 11:37 pm (UTC)I haven't mentioned Cliff before? Odd. Ohh, I know. I think you guys know him as dumbass, asshole, hubby, etc.
You've NEVER heard of half.com? Honey honey honey. That's where I get most of my used books. Text books: go to bigwords.com and use them. It's a search engine and it give you the cheapest places online to purchase books.
I really need to get back to the group. *sigh* I've been away for SOOO long that it's hard to get back into it. I'm trying though. BTW, do you have a link to the snarry-a-thon? Hmmm am I right in thinking a certain person has written all three stories? Mental note to go there now.
I've NEVER read a fiction where Harry started out as a girl. I read cross-dressing, trans-gender, d/s, bdsm, etc. I just can't bring myself to read "Harry is a girl". bleh It squiggs me out.

Date: 2009-05-04 12:12 am (UTC)Hahaha. Okay. *puts Cliff's name to face in head* xDD Gotcha!
I don't really have money to buy books, so I don't need to shop ebay or amazon or anything. I have a little under $200 to buy things I want for the next two and a half, unless I break down and get a job while I'm in accelerated school, meaning I learn less and take less classes at a time and extend my time in school, increasing student loans. xD I'll show the site to my mom though, and maybe I'll get more books for birthday/Christmas if they're cheaper. xD And, awesome about the textbooks. I don't know if they'll have programming books but it's worth looking into. I appreciate that. Anything that saves money makes my parents happier with me. : )
Advice for the group- delete all the emails you have from us and start from scratch. That's what I did a few weeks ago. The drabbles are all in the files section so you won't miss out on them, and then you can keep up from here. : )
And no- three different people wrote them. I'm just awesome and know awesome people. xD
Well, you're lucky. Because little girl!Harry fiction is good. xD Not missing much, really!!
